The Graduate

Clip Eight of the Minimalist Fashionista on Lockdown: 'The Graduate', American fashion and regarding acquaintances in a pandemic

E. Nina Rothe April 6, 2020

Today’s clip is all about our great U.S. of A. I miss my adoptive country and feel sad for the news coming out of America regarding this virus. I dedicate my thoughts and well wishes to all affected, and infected, though I’ll keep my reservations about the medical authorities in the US and around the world.

I do believe we’re all staying home because that establishment is flawed. Not because we’re safeguarding ourselves.

The film for today is ‘The Graduate’ by Mike Nichols. It was groundbreaking more than fifty years ago, and today it’s even more on point. Starring Anne Bancroft and Dustin Hoffman, with a rocking soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel, it is my favorite American musical. What? Yes, I mean it, it’s as perfect a musical as ever was made and remains thoroughly modern. Stream it on Amazon Prime or buy it/rent it on iTunes. Check out the soundtrack, including “The Sound of Silence” — oh so appropriate — here.

My cool red lipstick is by Kiko Milano, available online. I chose the lipgloss which is only $7. You can find every bit of your make up needs there.

My jacket is by Aqua, available exclusively at Bloomingdales. It was on sale last year but you can find a similar style this year, I’m sure. They have something like it, in fake leather, every season. My t-shirt I bought at Buffalo Exchange, the mecca of great clothing for less, for $9. It’s as American as apple pie, don’t you think?

Oh BTW if you crave some apple pie, here is a recipe.

Earrings are from H & M, two pairs mixed and matched. You can choose any style, one stud and one hanging, and match them together as asymmetrical. I love this look, it’s quite popular in Italy.

Finally my thought for the day has to do with friendships, but not the deep kind that will survive this pandemic. I’m thinking of those casual acquaintances that I get to see once, maybe twice a year, at film festivals — all canceled — and press junkets — also completely done with for this season. I miss the cordial, distant yet close interaction that has no chance of existing in today’s environment. We are social distancing and that means also separating from our acquaintances.

What do you miss most? Feel free to email me or comment on YouTube with your answer.
