Agnes Varda and Robin Wright

Exceptional Women: Agnes Varda and Robin Wright honored at this year's Marrakech Film Festival

E. Nina Rothe October 15, 2018

You talk exceptional women and few garner as much unanimous adoration as legendary filmmaker, photographer and artist Agnes Varda. Then you think versatile actresses, women who have transformed themselves from super popular soap opera stars to beloved movie icons and the name Robin Wright immediately comes to mind.

Well, as it turns out both of these legendary women in their own right, or “Wright” if you pardon the pun, will be honored with the Etoile d’Or Award under the starry sky of the Moroccan city of Marrakech this December.

The Marrakech International Film Festival is fast becoming THE place to be at the end of November, start of December. Apart from its international flair and world cinema megastars this year’s festival, in its 17th edition, will also will feature great films from the MENA region, which to me means heaven under the stars.

And it’s undeniable that the city hosting the festival is one of the most stunning locations on earth — so you betcha I’m looking forward to it!

As far as Wright goes, I can’t wait to learn more about her as a woman, since I’ve always admired her career as a movie and TV star. She said about being in Marrakech:

“I’m honored to be receiving the l'Etoile d'Or award at this year’s Marrakech Film Festival. I’m thrilled to be visiting the country of Morocco and grateful to be given this opportunity to experience the Moroccan culture and enjoy such a beautiful location.”

But Varda I know, I’ve met her once before in Cannes and if our past meeting is any indication, the groundbreaking filmmaker will add a dose of panache and exploration to my Marrakech experience. Wait, change that to all our collective Marrakech experiences — for everyone who will be in attendance. She confirms it in her message:

"I loved Marrakech before the festival existed, but the addition of cinema makes me even more happy to come back and meet the community of Moroccan and worldwide filmmakers and film buffs."

So kudos to the festival for securing these wondrous talents and wonderful women, thus making sure this edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival will be the stuff cinematic dreams are made of!
